Freedom from fear

Don’t be Afraid Any Longer

This phrase, ‘Do not be afraid any longer…’ affirms that fear had been present up to that point.  Jarius had been afraid.  Afraid for a long time.  Maybe fear was his constant companion.  We don’t know, but maybe his only daughter had a long-term illness and her dying had been coming for years.  All we know is that he had been afraid…

Luke 8:40–42 (NAS): 40 And as Jesus returned, the people welcomed Him, for they had all been waiting for Him.

 41 And there came a man named Jairus, and he was an official of the synagogue; and he fell at Jesus’ feet, and began to implore Him to come to his house;

42 for he had an only daughter, about twelve years old, and she was dying…

49 While He was still speaking, someone *came from the house of the synagogue official, saying, “Your daughter has died; do not trouble the Teacher anymore.”

50 But when Jesus heard this, He answered him, “Do not be afraid any longer; only believe, and she will be made well.”

51 When He came to the house, He did not allow anyone to enter with Him, except Peter and John and James, and the girl’s father and mother.

52 Now they were all weeping and lamenting for her; but He said, “Stop weeping, for she has not died, but is asleep.”

53 And they began laughing at Him, knowing that she had died.

54 He, however, took her by the hand and called, saying, “Child, arise!”

55 And her spirit returned, and she got up immediately; and He gave orders for something to be given her to eat.

56 Her parents were amazed; but He instructed them to tell no one what had happened.

How long have you been afraid?  A long time?  Has the fear of an illness stalked you, day and night?  Fear of some financial breakdown?  Fear of losing a mate?  A child?  How long have you been afraid?

Today Jesus is before you.  He is saying,

”Don’t be afraid any longer.”

You are released.  You are freed.  Jesus is in charge.  Not even death can hinder Him.  As of today, you don’t have to be afraid any longer.

Jesus,

Thank you for freeing us from fear.  Thank you.  We don’t have to be afraid any longer.  We are yours.

Amen.
